UVI Servers: purpose and use

  What is a server?

A computer that delivers information and software to other computers linked by a network. Click on the following link for more information about servers:

Faculty who login to the UVI domain have access to several servers. These servers have a variety of functions. The Enterprise server provides secure space for persons and divisions to store university related data and has a home directory for each faculty and staff member. As with all UVI servers, Enterprise is backed up nightly protecting data stored there against loss. The home directory on Enterprise is visible only to the owner and the system administrator; it cannot be queried by anyone inside or outside the University.

How do I secure my files?

http://faculty.uvi.edu is a web server for faculty. This means that information stored on this server CAN be queried by persons both inside and outside the university, including search engines. It's purpose is to allow you to post information that could be accessible to your students for classes. TIP: Although there is a private directory under each faculty's name, it is best to store sensitive data on your home directory on Enterprise or on your office machine with local backup.

If you currently do not login into the UVI domain to use your machine and need help in doing so, please contact the helpdesk at X1466

What other ways can I back up my data?

With the speed and new developments in technology today, there are numerous options for backing up your computer data. All UVI machines purchased in the last 2 years or longer come with CD recordable drives. These drives hold up to 700 mb of data and can use either a recordable CD or a CDRW, which allows you to record over existing data. These disks are readily available at the UVI bookstore and local computer and office supply stores. Many machines also have a DVD recorder. These drives can record up to 4.3 or 8.6 gigabytes of data and can also be purchased in either format.

The next best thing to ice cream is the invention of the pen drive (thumb drive, USB drive, Flash drive). These handy little devices which are plugged into a USB port can hold from 16 mb (more than 15 floppies) up to now 4 gb; they are re-recordable and very durable. Many pen drives offer security features that allow you to password protect or lock your files. The UVI libraries' new computer labs, no longer have floppy drives and incoming students are being instructed on the use of these wonderful devices for use at UVI. Join the wave of the future.
